Do you think you need a survey?

Step 1: Determine your reason for a survey.

There are several reasons you might need a survey.
Common reasons include:

  • property line location for new construction (including fences)
  • property line disputes
  • property/lot splits
  • mortgage location inspection for appraisal and bank records
  • new subdivision or property split planning
  • utility or right-of-way easement disputes or location

For any of the above reasons that require any new property lines or pins, each county has slightly different requirements for the type of survey you may need.

Step 2: Contact your county zoning & planning officials

If your survey is a new survey (i.e. not an existing survey location, or re-survey), the next step is to contact your local zoning & planning offical at the county engineer's office to get a better understanding of what kind of survey you may need and what the approval and record keeping process is for your county. The county official will be able to tell you all related processes you may need to go through for approval.
